Learn to Swim Stages
Our learn to swim programme has 5 progressive stages that will take non-swimmers from Stage 1, through to strong, competent swimmers in Stage 5. We have aligned each of the 5 Stages to the Scottish Swimming's Learn to Swim Programme.
All swimmers will be issued with a coloured hat depending on what Stage of the programme they are in. Once they pass a Stage they will be issued with their new hat.
Below is a list of the skills that swimmers work towards in each Stage of the programme:
Stage 1 Beginner 1 Pale Blue Hat
Key Skills required before progressing to Stage 2:-
Stage 2 Beginner 2 Yellow Hat
Key Skills required before progressing to Stage 3:-
Stage 3 Skill Development Red Hat
Key Skills required before progressing to Stage 4:-
Stage 4 Stroke Development Orange Hat
Key Skills required before progressing to Future Stars Squad:-
Stage 5 - Future Stars Squad White Hat
Following Stage 4 of our Learn to Swim Programme we will offer swimming coaching and technique refinement in the Future Stars Squad. This class will add to the key skills of streamlining, sculling and technical competence on all four strokes by developing the swimmers strength and stamina in the water.
All swimmers will be issued with a coloured hat depending on what Stage of the programme they are in. Once they pass a Stage they will be issued with their new hat.
Below is a list of the skills that swimmers work towards in each Stage of the programme:
Stage 1 Beginner 1 Pale Blue Hat
Key Skills required before progressing to Stage 2:-
- Kick effectively with a float on front
- Paddle without an aid on front
- Kick effectively with a float on back
- Paddle without an aid on back
- Put face in the water and blow bubbles
- Roll 180 degrees from front to back
- Jump in without assistance
- Float on Front and Back with an aid
Stage 2 Beginner 2 Yellow Hat
Key Skills required before progressing to Stage 3:-
- 10m Freestyle kick with a board
- Swim Freestyle with correct arm action
- 10m kick on back without an aid
- Swim Backstroke with correct arm action
- Push & glide on front and back
- Float on front and back unaided for 10 seconds
- Fully submerge & pick up an object from pool floor in shallow water
- Jump into deep water unassisted
Stage 3 Skill Development Red Hat
Key Skills required before progressing to Stage 4:-
- Kick on front and back in a streamline position
- 15m Freestyle swim with good breathing skills
- 15m Backstroke swim maintaining good body position
- Kick Breaststroke & Butterfly with correct leg action
- Swim 10m full stroke Breaststroke
- Confident in deep water - treading water & swimming
- Perform a kneeling or crouching dive into deep water
- Perform a forwards roll in shallow water
Stage 4 Stroke Development Orange Hat
Key Skills required before progressing to Future Stars Squad:-
- Swim 25m Freestyle with good technique and breathing skills
- Swim 25m Backstroke with good technique
- Kick 15m Breaststroke demonstrating correct technique
- Swim 15m Breaststroke with good technique
- Kick 10m Butterfly on front & back
- Swim 10m Butterfly with good technique
- Collect objects from the pool floor in deep water
- Crouching or standing dive and kick 5m in streamlined position
- Sculling skills - Forwards & Backwards
Stage 5 - Future Stars Squad White Hat
Following Stage 4 of our Learn to Swim Programme we will offer swimming coaching and technique refinement in the Future Stars Squad. This class will add to the key skills of streamlining, sculling and technical competence on all four strokes by developing the swimmers strength and stamina in the water.
- Swim 50m Freestyle including tumble turn
- Swim 50m Backstroke attempting correct turn
- Swim 25m Breastroke with correct technique
- Kick 25m Breastroke
- Swim 15-25m Butterfly with correct technique
- Kick 15-25m Butterfly
- Perform an underwater Breastroke pull out
- Shallow racing dive and streamline for 5m
- Demonstrate correct finishes on all 4 strokes
